We’re about to leave for a month-long trip back east, which means Saturday’s cyclocross race was the only one for me this year. Too bad because this race was not up my alley. A very wet and super-slick course, combined with lots of tight turns, put bike-handling at a premium. I prefer lung-busting courses. After I crashed twice, hit one tree, and skidded out on numerous corners, I decided that not getting hurt was more important than doing well. So I backed off the throttle and just tried to survive. In that respect, the race was a success. But the white-knuckle experience made me a little less sad that I will miss the rest of the series.

Wild first race. I missed the start by a minute or two, then took a wrong turn. So I missed the excitement of the winner racing in a Speedo. Results (and speedo pictures if you dare).
Just finished a four day Whitewater Rescue class designed for packrafters. Excellent hands-on class with lots of swimming in Eagle River. Glad some of my buddies took it too. There is another course coming up this weekend. I highly recommend it for all packrafters.
I’ve noticed a disturbing trend here in endurefunland. Let’s tally up the last six posts, shall we? Three posts about races I am not doing. Two posts about other people’s bike rides. And one post about wildfire smoke.

This was the intro to a long post I wrote recently about my lack of adventure this summer. It was therapeutic to write, but it was depressing to read. It was full of excuses and self-pity. So I decided not to post it.
Each time I think I am about to turn the corner from Sedentary Lane onto the Adventure Expressway, I hit a dead-end or the car breaks down. Before I wallow too much, let’s just say that I am going a bit stir-crazy and leave it at that.
Mostly hike, a little run. I dare say it was my first real workout. Achilles felt great. Opposite knee, not so much. Aaarg, if its not one thing, its another.
Andrew Skurka’s office definitely has a better view than mine does. He’s currently in Alaska and recently hiked from Hope to Homer. Then he turned around and headed north through Kenia Fjords, the Chugach mountains, and is currently in the Talkeetna mountains on his way to Cantwell.
